In this compelling new book, Brian O'Neel tells the stories of martyrs associated with North America. Some are from other countries and died in their attempts to spread the faith on this continent. Some were born on this continent but died doing missionary work in other lands. Some were individual martyrs, and some were part of an heroic group. Some were "white martyrs" who, although they did not shed their blood for the faith, suffered much for the spread of their faith. The book includes: A lively presentation about each martyr (or group of martyrs)A practical application for the readerA historical context for how these martyrs helped the Church to grow in North AmericaThese martyrs changed the world by their courage and commitment, and their stories have the power to inspire us today to live our Catholic faith bravely and boldly.
Saint Paul was perhaps the most important evangelizer in the early Church, baptizing scores into a burgeoning Christianity. An Apostle and a martyr, he is most often remembered as a firebrand, but his letters were deeply and profoundly spiritual.
Throughout the journey of life, we all have moments of feeling lost. Experiences where we feel tested. It's at these times we need a signpost to point the way through the darkness and confusion to a clearer and better path. A PILGRIM'S JOURNEY is composed of 20 signposts, excerpts from the full-length work by Kampmann entitled SIGNPOSTS: A DEVOTIONAL, which shares the insights and wisdom he discovered as he journeyed through the pages of the New and Old Testaments. Designed as a daily devotional, it is built page by page on the assumption that the meaning and purpose of our lives is available to be discovered if only we take the time and trouble to look. Prepare yourself for the journey and keep your eyes open to the signposts along the way. You too will discover that God is always near and available for those who seek him.
What makes Pope Francis tick? And why does it matter? As the first Jesuit pope in history, Francis has brought a radical shift in focus that stems directly from a long line of Jesuits dating back to St. Ignatius of Loyola. In All the Pope's Saints, you'll get to know many Jesuit saintsboth famous and notwho are the Holy Father's heroes and role models.
In his newest book, Casting Nets with the Saints, Chris Stewart uses entertaining stories of saints to demonstrate "The Seven Characteristics of Effective Evangelizers."
Defenders of the faith have been raised up in every era of the Church to proclaim fidelity to the truth by their words and deeds. Some have fought heresy and overcome confusion like Athanasius against the Arians and Ignatius Loyola in response to the Protestant reformers. Others have shed their blood for the faith, like the early Christian martyrs of Rome, or Thomas More, John Fisher and Edmund Campion in Reformation England.
Still others have endured a "dry" martyrdom like St. Philip Howard, Cardinal Joseph Mindszenty and Jesuit Walter Ciszek. Intellectuals have been no less conspicuous in their zealous defense of the faith, like Bonaventure, Albert, Thomas Aquinas, or Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger. The stories of all these,and more, are told here in this book.
In this study, Michael W. Maher, S.J., assistant professor of History at Saint Louis University and a member of the Jesuit Historical Institute in Rome, explores the Jesuits contribution to the evolution of veneration of St. Joseph. Fr. Maher sees this contribution as closely linked to the spiritual practices and methods found in St. Ignatius Loyola s Spiritual Exercises, as well as to the congregations or sodalities founded by the Jesuits. The former encouraged using the imagination to fill in the scarcity of information about Joseph in the Gospels, while the latter promoted the saint as a model of Christian living to be imitated by husbands and fathers and as the patron of Christian dying since he died in the presence of and comforted by Jesus and Mary.
Many saints have borne the stigmata - wounds resembling those of Christ's crucifixion. While some of those saints have written about their experience, little is known of the personal experience of the first of all saints to brandish this extraordinary sign, Francis of Assisi. They were and have remained his carefully guarded secret.
The famous French author's unique writing style captivates the reader with the heroic story of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, a modern apostle of Catholic evangelization, Marian spirituality, and a martyr of charity. With the encouragement of Pope John Paul II and the help of documentation (some unpublished) given to him by the Vatican, Frossard chronicles the dramatic and moving life of this Polish Franciscan who volunteered to die in place of a fellow prisoner in Auschwitz.
While his heroic martyr's death is well known, Frossard shows how Kolbe's whole life was one of extraordinary generosity in devotion to his ideal of "love without limits." Kolbe was that rare combination of mystic, intellectual genius, theologian, and down-to-earth practicality. His tremendous creative energies (despite constant bouts of tuberculosis and less than one lung) enhanced the lives of all those who knew him, the millions who read his publications, and the countless persons inspired by his example. Forget Not Love reveals the interesting and impressive details of Kolbe's childhood, vision of Mary, brilliance in his studies, his founding of the largest monastery in the world (700 Franciscans), massive printing apostolate, missionary journeys to Japan, and his final act of love in Auschwitz. Frossard has captured the heart of the man whom Pope John Paul II declared "the patron saint of this difficult century."

Regine Pernoud, the highly acclaimed French medieval historian, and author of best-selling titles on Joan of Arc and Hildegard of Bingen, as well as the book Those Terrible Middle Ages, presents an enlighteneing biography of one of France's most revered saints, and man whose impact on France, and Europe, continues to this days. Martin of Tours lived in the 4th century, at that great turning point in history when the Roman Empire fell and the Church took charge in the West. He left a successful career in the military life to become a monk, and later a Bishop who traveled extensively, evangelizing the countryside and creatiung that particular sort of community life in a village that is now called a "parish." More than four hundred towns and some four thousand parished in France are named after St. Martin. The term "chapel" is derived from the actual church where pilgrims venerate Martin's "cape" or cloak. Martin of Tours was a servant of the common man, as well as the nobility, and a very humble man who responded to the needs of his times and and opened up vast perspectives for ordinary, everyday life. Given the crisis of the Christian Faith now facing France and all of Europe, the story of this solider and great apostle and Christian evangelist is a timely one indeed.

In this edgy, honest, and often audacious book of Catholic spirituality, blogger and popular podcaster Maria Morera Johnson explores the qualities of twenty-four holy women who lived lives of virtue in unexpected and often difficult circumstances.
In My Badass Book of Saints, Johnson shares her experience as a first-generation Cuban-American, educator of at-risk college students, and caregiver for a husband with Lou Gehrig's disease. Through humorous, empowering, and touching portraits of twenty-four spiritual mentors who inspired her, Johnson shows how their bravery, integrity, selflessness, perseverance, and hope helped her and can help others have courage to reach for a closer connection to God.
She presents remarkable holy women and saints--including the gun-toting Servant of God Sr. Blandina Segale who tried to turn the heart of Billy the Kid, and Nazi resister Irena Sendler who helped smuggle children out of the Warsaw Ghetto during World War II--in a way that brings their vivid personalities to life and helps readers live out the challenges of their lives with virtue and conviction. The book includes a group discussion guide.

This book is a culmination of Father Zeno's life work. With the cooperation of the Oratorian Fathers, he was given full access to all of Newman's letters, diaries, and complete published and unpublished sermons. From all this he has drawn together the interior struggles Newman faced from childhood until his death. Zeno allows Newman to speak through his work and writings, an exceedingly rich source. This is a landmark work considered one of the best spiritual biographies of John Henry Newman ever written. This book was first published in Dutch and met with immediate and extensive acclaim. It covers Newman's young life as an Anglican, the doubts he faced in light of his historical studies, his conversion to Catholicism, the trials he faced as a result of his conversion, and his remarkable growth in holiness and the interior life.

St. Maria Goretti was only a child when she died a martyr's death. Yet today, she inspires millions who find in her a perfect model of purity and holiness. Read here about her great holiness in the midst of tremendous suffering, how she died at the hands of a vicious murderer who tried to defile her purity, and how she visited this very same murderer years later in his jail cell to forgive him. Fr. Jeffrey Kirby examines the life of this little saint as he reflects on the Beatitudes and how she, along with her family, lived them each day. In a world where purity is corrupted in the darkness of the night and mercy is abandoned in the name of vengeance, let us turn to St. Maria Goretti and see her as the dawn of a new day, where the light of Christ shines on each of us and guides us into His Kingdom.

"The stories of saints reaffirm that holiness is not restricted by age, sex, nationality, geography, or time in which a person lives. Saints represent almost every occupation and family background. Holy women and men use their diverse, God-given talents by witnessing in their unique way to God's compassionate love; there are no clones among the saints." -- from the Introduction

Gnawing worms, unquenchable fire, utter darkness, weeping and gnashing of teeth. With these fearful words, Jesus warned that hell is real ... and that we could end up there.
Since the Early Church, Catholic saints and other visionaries have reported horrific scenes of eternal punishment. Dozens of saints throughout history have described the terrors of hell, and relayed horror of being separated from God for eternity so that we may see for ourselves and repent.
In Saints Who Saw Hell, you'll find ...
The scriptural witness to the reality of hell, including the warnings of Jesus, the prophets, and the Apostles;
Scenes from the second-century Apocalypse of Peter, the oldest surviving Christian vision of hell;
Ancient reports collected by Pope St. Gregory the Great;
Medieval accounts from St. Bede, the voyage of St. Brendan, St. Hildegard of Bingen, St. Catherine of Siena, and St. Frances of Rome.
Witnesses to hell from the time of the Catholic Reformation, such as St. Teresa of Ávila, Blessed Maria de Agreda, and Blessed Richard of St. Anne;
Visions from later centuries, such as those of St. Veronica Giuliani, Blessed Anne Catherine Emmerich, St. John Bosco, the children of Fatima, and St. Faustina Kowalska;
... and other accounts from those who insist they have witnessed the fate of the damned.
The scenes in these pages, varying in detail and source, all testify to one harrowing truth: Hell is the final guarantee that what we do really matters.
For us here on earth, a peak at the grisly tortures of hell is sometimes what we really need to redouble our efforts at achieving the glorious sweetness of heaven.
Fr. Aloysiys Roche (1886-1968) answers that question with wit and wonder in this refreshing, rollicking account of outstanding saintly achievements across the centuries. These stories will inspire you to follow the saints' examples as you discover how they:
Lived fascinating lives that make legends seem dull by comparison
Practiced heroic selfness, detachment, self-denial, and generosity
Displayed startling energy and stamina in fulfilling their missions
Transformed society through ways of thinking far ahead of their time
Left their imprint on the world's geography, languages, and cultures
This new, definitive edition of Fr. Roche's modern classic features a new Foreword about the author's life by Paul Thigpen. It also features 133 new biographic and explanatory footnotes; comprehensive Scripture citations, and an updated style and vocabulary to make it accessible to the contemporary reader. We must never be "reconciled to our own mediocrity," Fr. Roche insists. Let the high heroism portrayed in Splendor of the Saints stir you "to scale the heights and to get your head among the stars."
A gift edition of Mitch Finley's collection of true stories of miracles granted and prayers answered.
This book is about belief in the help of the saints. It is about recovering a wider sense of the community of faith, one that includes devotion to saints as heavenly intercessors with God.
Beginning with a brief explanation of the communion of saints, we are then introduced to St. Anthony of Padua and St. Jude and given a history of how devotion to these two saints became popular in the U.S.
St. Jude, the patron of lost causes, and St. Anthony of Padua, the finder of lost objects, are two saints who have attracted popular devotion and who have become fixtures in the pantheon of Catholic saints. This book features a selection of real-life stories garnered from people whose prayers to St. Anthony of Padua and St. Jude have been answered.
